The Truth About Independence Day in America

“Hey Siri, play Ya Ya by Beyoncé from the Cowboy Carter Album.”

“My family lived & died in America,
Good ol’ USA
Whole lotta red in that white & blue,
History can’t be erased.”

Beyoncé

The Fourth of July fills me with waves of emotion. As a Black woman in America, it’s bittersweet. While the USA gained independence in 1776, my ancestors weren’t legally free until 1865 & is still systematically enslaved to this present day. Yet here I am, proud to be American & equally proud of my rich culture and heritage in this country. Today, I celebrate my mental freedom & resilience.

Enjoy your day, stay classy; & most importantly, stay woke👑
